“City of Joy” is a Netflix original documentary directed by Madeleine Gavin. City of Joy is about Congolese women who have been affected by physical and sexual violence. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, war and rape become interconnected in order for the attackers to gain power. Rape is used as a weapon of war, and these women become vulnerable to attacks at any moment. Different women from different tribes/villages experience the same trauma but unfortunately some of them also end up losing their lives. Currently, there is a genocide occurring in the DRC and millions have died. City of Joy is a physical place and acts as a safe haven for rape victims to recover by providing educational programs for their participants and sufficient health care. The team at City Of Joy consists of Congolese doctor Dr. Denis Mukwege, Congolese human rights activist Christine Schuler-Deschryver and playwright Eve Ensler.
