Vice has a documentary titled “The Black Women’s Defense League Taking Aim at Racism and Misogyny.” The Black Women’s Defense League is an organization that is based in the U.S. and was inspired by the Black Panther Party, and was formed in Dallas in 2015 by Niecee Cornute. In the documentary, members of the league discuss how gun ownership and laws perpetuate racism against black people. Niecee states that black people are affected by a combination of racism and violent patriarchy. The league discusses the oppressors within their community as well. The documentary revealed shocking statistics about violence against black women. For example, every 19 hours a black woman in American is killed by a man, and every 21 hours a black woman in America is killed by a black man. The league advocates for more black people to get familiarized with guns. The league also provides self-defence classes with firearms, which are safely handled, and also have community programs.
“The gun in itself is a tool, it’s a tool and that’s it…however if you’re providing education and knowledge of self, then it becomes useful for what it is, which is self-defence because in the event that you or a family member needs to use it, it’s really important that its not something scary to you”
