Generations of Romanian girls trafficked into Europe’s Sex Industry, is a documentary about young girls who are affected by poverty and sex-trafficked. Due,to male gaze, young Romanian girls are often coerced or deceived into working in the sex-trafficking business. In the summer of 2015 the Thomson Reuters Foundation met 17-year-old Maya, who is from a small town in rural Romania. A bright and articulate teenager, Maya shared her experiences of being trafficked into sex work in the city by her boyfriend. In rural Romania many young people see the sex industry as the best way to make a living. However, this makes it difficult for young girls to continue their education and entraps them into this toxic cycle.
“Through interviews with Maya’s sisters and those closest to her, this film highlights the difficult choices that fuel the trafficking of young women in Romania.”
