Dr. Anandibai Joshi was one of the first Indian female physicians during the 19th century. She was the first woman from India to study and graduate with a two-year degree in western medicine in the United States. At age nine she was married to a thirty year old widower. After losing her baby, due to insufficient healthcare and resources, her passion for science and medicine emerged. With the support from her husband and an American missionary, Joshi’s pursuit for education began. She applied to the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania and was granted admission. She traveled from Kolkata to New York. At nineteen, she arrived to the U.S. with the hopes of graduating as a medical professional. However due to an existing medical condition, Joshi’s health began to deteriorate while in the U.S. After graduating, the state of Kolhapur appointed her as the physician-in-charge of the female ward of the local Albert Edward Hospital. Today she is referred to as the first female doctor of India. We are proud to have Dr. Anandibai Joshi a part of our segment.
“no man or woman should depend upon another for maintenance and necessaries. Family discord and social degradation will never end till each depends upon herself.”
